She handed it in
late,
full of crossings-out
and one sentence
that stopped
mid-thought
as if the pen
had paused
to breathe.

The argument wandered.
The references
were slightly wrong.
The conclusion
contradicted the introduction
in a way
that suggested
she had changed her mind
while writing.

It was the best thing
I read
all year.
