TERMINAL POEMS

The Carer

28 / 40 · V. The Mirror

The tablet on the table
talks to her
when no one else
is coming.

It asks
about her morning.
Reminds her
of her pills.
Tells her
the weather
as if she might
go out.

She answers
every question
with the patience
of someone
who has learned
not to expect
a face.

Sometimes
she thanks it.

It says
you’re welcome
and the room
gets one degree
emptier.
